Ontinyent is a lovely town in 'real Spain' with one of the best secondary schools in the country and a large shopping centre. The beaches of Costa Blanca are 35 mins away, a pleasant drive but far enough away to avoid the typical British 'ex-pat' types. The town itself has a beautiful freshwater lake and beach where you can swim and sunbathe.
In the local area, there are some beautiful ancient villages and many vineyards with amazing local wines.
Spanish life in 'real Spain' is very relaxed and the locals are very friendly. A cheap (but drinkable) bottle of red wine starts at about £1 and the sun shines over 300 days a year, so it can be enjoyed at any time on the roof terrace. Life is sweet here.
